Korean American Engineer: Chevrolet’s All New Sonic and Cruze (By Tessa Baughman)

Q: Where are you originally from? What city and country?

I was born in Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA. I lived in Arkansas until I went to college in Missouri.

Q: What is your affiliation with Korea and the Korean culture?

My mother is Korean. I was raised in a bicultural home.

Q: When you were younger, what kinds of activities cultivated the engineering side in you? What activities did you enjoy that helped you to where you are today?

I knew from a young age that I wanted to be an engineer. I participated in after school programs like Odyssey of the Mind that promoted creative problem-solving. I also attended summer camps (AEGIS, NASA Sharp Plus, National Youth Science Camp) that promoted math and science. I was also accepted to the Arkansas School for Mathematics and Sciences, a public boarding school for juniors and seniors, which allowed me to take advanced math and science courses (Calculus 1 – 3, Physics 1-2). This allowed me to take engineering courses as a freshman and complete my B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 3.5 years. [Read more...]

Korean Car Designer: General Motor’s 2011 Sonic (By JeSung Ahn)

(By JeSung Ahn)

Q: Where are you originally from? What city and country?

I was born in Pusan, the southern coastal city of South Korea.  My parents, sister and I lived around Seoul for many years. I most recently lived and worked in Seoul for about three years.

Q: What is your affiliation with Korea and the Korean culture?

Korea is my mother country. I have lived in South Korea all of my life, and just came over to the US in January 2011.

Q: When you were younger, what kinds of activities cultivated the creative side in you? What activities did you enjoy that helped you to where you are today?

When I was kid, my father happened to find a drawing of mine that I had made of an ant on the corner of a newspaper. He saw the amount of detail I had put into the drawing. It was very realistic so he went to a bookstore the next day to pick up a couple of art books for me. [Read more...]

My Start-up: Is it Worth the Risk? (By Andy Park of KrapyDNA)

(By Andy Park of KrapyDNA) What is it about risk taking that’s so appealing? Possibly the thrill and exhilaration when succeeding, or the ego that you build that you conquered some risk? Either way, I’ve loved risk taking my whole life. It gets my blood flowing and it’s so exciting. Unfortunately, most of the risks I’ve taken up to this point in my life have been for foolish gains and petty thrills. As a kid, I was pretty reckless and didn’t have much fear. I would try stupid stunts or crazy tricks on my bike and inevitably it led to a lot of bumps and bruises. Even at an older age, I took different chances and risks that weren’t really beneficial.

The reason I bring this up is that my whole life, I’ve been taking foolish risks. Risks where the gain or outcome isn’t even that great, and the risk itself is somewhat substantial. Even though this is true, the beautiful thing about being under God and His grace is that He can use our weaknesses in a good way.

I recently read a quote about risk taking that said, “the most intelligent risks are those where the potential downside is limited, but the potential upside is virtually unlimited.” [Read more...]

Konnect Magazine Interviews Philadelphia Eagles Cheerleader Connie Chung (By Connie Chung)

(By Connie Chung, Philadelphia Eagles Cheerleader)

Q: What is your name and where are you originally from? Was Philadelphia always your hometown?

My American name is Connie and my unofficial Korean name is Kyoori. I was born and raised in the western suburbs of Philadelphia. I’ve been living in the same house for the past 23 years of my life, so yes, Philadelphia has always been my hometown.

Q: Being accepted by the Eagles cheerleading squad seems nearly impossible I hear – what caused you to actually try out for the team?

I have always loved to dance. I grew up watching Janet Jackson on MTV and would imitate her moves from all her music videos. At the age of 7, I begged and pleaded with my parents to put me in ballet class. My mother is a very traditional first-generation Korean so she denied me of my dancing dreams at a very young age. I used to cry myself to sleep because I wanted to take ballet and jazz like all my other school friends. When I was 12 years old, my mother eventually allowed me to try out for my middle school cheerleading team. It was the closest to “dancing” I could get.  [Read more...]

Want to be an Entrepreneur? An Insight of What to Expect (By Ashley Payne)

(By Ashley Payne) No one knows but you. When you decide to become an entrepreneur, you’ll never be short on opinions from other people. “That doesn’t make sense.” “That sounds like an excellent idea!” “Why would you do that?” “You should think about doing this…” Everyone has their own ideas at what can help you become successful. Your reaction to this could be many different things, annoyance, appreciation, confusion. At first I thought, “hey, don’t you think that I know how to run my own business?” Then sometimes, “wait, am I doing something wrong?” Yet at other times, “that idea would never work.” Then six months later, I realize that it’s a great idea and use it.

Over time, you’ll relax when you hear these things. You settle in to what you’re doing, become more confident, and carefully consider what people suggest. You’ll probably realize (as I did) that people make all of these suggestions because they honestly want to help you. People know that the life of an entrepreneur is incredibly risky. It’s something that they may never want to do, but they admire you for your efforts. [Read more...]

KrapyDNA – Why Community Means so Much for my Start-up (By Andy Park)

(By Andy Park of KrapyDNA) I’m so thankful and humbled by the encouragement and support I’ve been getting ever since I took the leap of faith in February to start this brand. God really speaks to me through His people and shows me that I’m not in this by myself, but that I have a community and team of believers that care and ultimately have the same goal as I do in glorifying Him. I’ve never been one to need much encouragement in the things that I did, but starting this brand is probably the hardest thing I’ve done and the encouragements have been very welcome and almost necessary for me. I’m learning more and more that community and the people you surround yourself with is so important in sustainability and well being.

Although all the support I’ve gotten to this point has been amazing, two specific instances really stand out to me because they were so genuine in nature. [Read more...]

Q: Describe some of the day to day business challenges in producing your shirts?

Creative direction for the shirts is one of the hardest but also one of the most enjoyable things I do. Almost all of my shirts will be released as part of a collection which will have one central theme or message to it and brainstorming ways to keep that collection cohesive can be challenging. Another big challenge I face in producing shirts is the financial aspect. Sacrificing quality is not an option and therefore I need to be creative in keeping costs down in other areas to be able to manufacture a strong inventory of desirable products.

Q: Is it only shirts? If not, what else?

Our initial product line consisted of t-shirts and stickers. I am currently looking into a few more products to release in the coming months which will include hoodies, hats, and more. Stay tuned! [Read more...]
