(By Joe Kim) One of my entrees into the world of Asian American cinema was “Yellow”.  Directed by Korean-American filmmaker Chris Chan Lee in 1998 and featuring a young John Cho (Harold & Kumar series), the film’s tagline was: “Eight teens in Los Angeles have one night they will never forget.”  As a teenager myself at that time, I was drawn to the striking in your face film title and the wild plot which was far left from the model minority (or kung fu majority) stereotype that is still going strong to this day. Yellow was a gritty low budget indie that helped hail in an era of Asian American films from a generation of Asian American filmmakers fed up with the status quo.  [Read more...]
